"AMBOSS’ Self-Assessment was a great transition from passive step studying through classes to focused dedicated study period.  This exam gives you a taste of test day and a baseline of where you are going into dedicated...It's really hard to find good questions with good answer explanations, but this self-assessment has them!"

Aaishwariya G.

University of Central Florida College of Medicine

"…[W]hen it came to Step 1 prep, the Self-Assessment was the perfect first step in getting ready for dedicated studying; not only were questions well made and the test at the perfect time to give me a "baseline" of where I was at knowledge-wise, but also, the in-depth explanations (linked to the AMBOSS library) provided an unparalleled review depth and integration after receiving the score report."

Samuel C.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine

"AMBOSS was really a one-stop shop for my [Step 1] study...I took the Self-Assessment in Feb (that AMBOSS provides to everyone for free!), and had a good idea of where I stood preparation-wise months before the actual exam. It was so helpful to know what I needed to work more on that much in advance, so that I could really pinpoint where I wanted to spend my time and tailor my schedule."

What is the AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment?

The AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment includes 160 exam-style questions modeled on USMLE Step 1, designed to reflect the structure, reasoning, and content distribution of the exam. You’ll work through four timed blocks of 40 questions, testing yourself under realistic exam conditions. (Blocks can also be taken individually throughout self-assessment week, but we recommend taking them altogether to build your stamina for the real thing.)

The assessment can be completed over 7 days, from March 18 to 24, 2026. You must complete all blocks within this window to receive your score report.

You’ll have unlimited free access to AMBOSS during this week, as well as for a few days after it, so you can review the report.

Can I take the AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment for free, or do I have to pay a fee?

Our self-assessment is free to take from March 18 to 24, 2026. When you sign up, you’ll have unlimited free access to AMBOSS throughout that week and for an additional few days after, so that you can review your score report. You can also buy this self-assessment for $49.99 after the free week is over.

What is the difference between the Self-Assessment I can buy on the platform and the free Self-Assessment?

The AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment is available to buy on the platform at any time for $49.99. The same Self-Assessment (content, format, etc.) will also be available for free for one week, March 18-24, 2026. The only difference between the Self-Assessments is the cost and availability.

Do I need an AMBOSS account to access the Self-Assessment?

Yes, you’ll need an AMBOSS account to access the Self-Assessment. If you don’t have an AMBOSS account yet, create yours for free here. It only takes a few minutes to verify your email address and complete your profile.

Important: Please ensure that you sign up for the Self-Assessment using the same email address as your AMBOSS account.

Where can I find and start the AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment?

You will receive an email from us on March 18 with a link to access and begin the Self-Assessment. Please just make sure you sign up before then at this link

Can I take the Self-Assessment earlier or later on?

The AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment is available for free only during self-assessment week (March 18-24, 2026).

However, it is also available on demand for $49.99. Find out more here.

Is the relative distribution of topics the same as in the actual Step 1 exam?

Yes, our Self-Assessment reflects the relative distribution of topics on the actual USMLE exam.

Do I have to complete the entire self-assessment/all four blocks in one sitting?

You can, but you don’t have to. You can split the Self-Assessment up into chunks and take each block at any point throughout the week. That said, we recommend that you complete the exam in one sitting, since this is the best way to simulate the actual exam and build your stamina.

Will I be able to review my answers right away?

The self-assessment exam is made up of four blocks, each including 40-questions. After answering all 40 questions in a block, you will have the option to review the completed block’s correct answers and explanations or to continue with the rest of the exam.

You will also be able to go back and see your completed blocks and review your answers at any time during the Self-Assessment Week.

The completed self-assessment will be available for you to review until March 26, 2026 at 23:59 PST.

Can I take the Self-Assessment on a mobile device?

The self-assessment is not available on the mobile apps. Although it is possible to take it on the web browser of your mobile device, we strongly recommend taking it on your desktop device.

Will I receive a detailed explanation of what my score means along with my report?

Yes! The results of this year’s Self-Assessment will be in the same format as the NBME’s report, so you’ll find out exactly what you need to do to pass Step 1 with flying colors. You will also receive a list of performance-based topics that have been optimized for the latest Step 1 format. These will help you focus on the high-yield topics that will have the greatest positive impact on your exam preparation.

How predictive is my Self-Assessment score relative to my actual Step 1 exam score?

Just like the real Step 1 exam, the AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment places students on a scale relative to their peers who are taking the assessment at the same time. Our questions are tested and have been scrutinized by students in prior years, and we’re confident our questions are high-quality and representative of what you will see on the actual exam. Our score report also reflects the relative distribution of topics on the actual USMLE exam.

Will my score report include a 3-digit score?

Even though Step 1 is now pass/fail, over 95% of students surveyed said they’d still like to receive a 3-digit score! The score is a jumping-off point so you can gauge your progress and see what you need to do to comfortably pass Step 1 (and go on to score high on Step 2!).

Where can I sign up for the AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment?

You can sign up for AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment week at this link. You will receive an email from us once the Self-Assessment is live.

When does the AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment Week start and end? In which time zone?

AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment Week will begin on March 18 at 11:59 pm PST. You will receive an email on March 18 that will prompt you to begin the exam. The scoring of this exam replicates that of the actual Step 1 exam and is scaled according to the performance of your peers who take the assessment with you. For this reason, it will not be possible to take the self-assessment after March 24 at 11:59 pm PST.

When will I get my score report?

You must complete all four blocks of the self-assessment by March 24 at 11:59 PM PST to receive your score report. You will get an email with a link to your score report after the self-assessment is completed.

Can I access my completed self-assessment even after AMBOSS Step 1 Self-Assessment Week is over?

Yes, you’ll be able to access and review your completed self-assessment question blocks even after the event is over for as long as you have access to AMBOSS, though you won’t be able to change any of your answers. You can also go to the Analysis section of the platform for a general overview of your strengths and weaknesses, plus a list of study recommendations.
