One Platform, Two Exams, More Possibilities: How Dr. Daanish Leveraged his USMLE® Prep to Crush the Medical Licensing Exam in the UK (UKMLA)
Dr. Daanish, a UK medical graduate, maximized his career options by using AMBOSS to prepare for both the UK Medical Licensing Exam (UKMLA) and USMLE. Rather than juggling university lectures and scattered online sources, he used AMBOSS as his primary “textbook” and Qbank. By adopting a “USMLE-first” strategy, he leveraged the depth of knowledge and diagnostic skills he needed for the Step exams to make his local UK exams significantly easier, allowing him to keep his options open for both the UK and US health care systems.
How to balance the UKMLA with the USMLE
A dilemma for any international medical graduate (IMG) is timing: Should you study for the USMLE alongside your university finals? This issue is similar to what many USMLE candidates attending medical school in the UK face: how to study for the MLA when you are also considering taking the USMLE.
Dr. Daanish advises caution here. He does not recommend preparing for the USMLE simultaneously with UK finals because both require intense focus.
Instead, he advocates for a strategic sequence: Prepare for the USMLE Step 1 before preparing for the UK exams.
“Ideally, you should do the [USMLE] Steps before your UK exams, because the Steps will prepare you far more [...] If you've done (USMLE) Step 1 [...] the UKMLA will be a breeze.”
By preparing for the harder, more conceptual USMLE exam first, the local UK curriculum becomes significantly easier to manage, as the preclinical and clinical concepts overlap heavily.
Is AMBOSS relevant for the UKMLA?
Many UK students question whether AMBOSS, known as a US-focused platform, is truly relevant for the UKMLA, but Dr. Daanish debunked this myth by relying on the UKMLA content map built into the platform.
Using the dedicated UKMLA Study Guide, he followed a checklist approach that clearly outlined the required topics, moving systematically through the content map, opening linked articles, and testing himself to confirm alignment with specific NHS and UK requirements.
Instead of fragmented and sometimes outdated university lecture slides, he relied on AMBOSS, valuing that the content is reviewed by clinician editors and constantly updated.
Is it possible to have UK and US medical study resources in one place?
To bridge the gap between his UK university lectures and USMLE prep, Dr. Daanish built a specific tech stack that integrated AMBOSS into every part of his day.
1. AMBOSS as a Lecture Companion
Instead of relying solely on slides during university lectures, he would open the corresponding AMBOSS article to get a concise, one-page summary of the condition being discussed. He then cross-referenced this information with his professor’s teaching in real-time, thereby improving his learning experience.

2. Maximizing the Chrome Extension
Dr. Daanish also installed the AMBOSS Chrome extension to support his online learning. Whether he was reading through an article online or reading a UK-specific guideline, the extension automatically underlined medical terms and provided definitions. This meant he never had to leave his browser tab to verify information, which saved time and prevented him from going down a rabbit hole of information.
3. Anki Integration
To study even more effectively, he used the AMBOSS Anki add-on, so he could include high-yield USMLE flashcards in his daily review. This allowed Dr. Daanish to reinforce the knowledge required for the USMLE even when he was on the go.
“Genuinely, I don't think I've found anything that brings everything together the way AMBOSS does.”
