Questions that teach as they test
Step 2 CK is a clinical reasoning exam, asking you questions like, ‘Given this presentation, what's the next best step?’ AMBOSS questions are written by physicians to test the same thing, with multiple answer choices you'd realistically consider. When you're stuck between two options, the Attending Tip explains how a clinician would decide.

Student stories
What Step 2 CK students say
1 / 5
“I would highly recommend AMBOSS to any medical student or resident looking for an all encompassing resource. I started using it to help me prepare for my clerkships and Step 2. I ended up matching at my first choice in residency and continue to use AMBOSS daily as I am in my intern year.”
Kory
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
“I have used AMBOSS during all four years of medical school. During my clerkship years, I used AMBOSS primarily for shelf-studying and for Step 2. They have specific study plans for all clerkships and Step 2, which helped me to excel in all my exams.”
Briana
University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine
“AMBOSS changed the game and my only wish was that I started using it sooner! Once I started incorporating AMBOSS into my studying, my scores started drastically improving. I've been using it to study from day 1 of clinicals and my shelf scores have blown any other performance out of the water so far.”

FAQ
Step 2 CK questions, answered
Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge) is the second USMLE exam, usually taken after core clerkships. It's a one-day exam of up to 318 questions in sixteen 30-minute blocks, and it tests clinical decision-making skills, asking you questions like, ‘Given this presentation, what's the next best step?’ Unlike Step 1, your result is reported as a three-digit score, and residency programs use that score when reviewing applications. The passing score is 218.
Yes. Since May 7, 2026, Step 2 CK runs as sixteen 30-minute blocks of up to 20 questions instead of eight 60-minute blocks. AMBOSS Qbank sessions match the new format, so you practice the same block length and pacing you'll see on exam day. The content, question count, and scoring of the exam are unchanged.
AMBOSS has 4,100+ clinical practice questions for Step 2 CK and the Shelf exams, written and reviewed by physicians and mapped to the Step 2 CK content outline. They're part of a USMLE Qbank that also covers Step 1 and Step 3. One Qbank add-on gives you access to every question in the Qbank. Every question links to the AMBOSS Library article on that topic.
The national mean is around 250. What counts as competitive depends on the specialty: some programs screen at 240, others expect 250 or higher.
AMBOSS gives you three ways to know where you stand before test day:
- Track your score estimate in real time on the Analysis page. It updates after every question you answer in the Qbank.
- Take the Step 2 CK Self-Assessment, 160 questions, in one sitting, and get a three-digit score with a comparison to the national mean.
- Use the Score Predictor to combine your NBME forms, the Free 120, and your Self-Assessment into one predicted score and range.
In a survey of 1,985 fourth-year students at 159 US medical schools, students who used AMBOSS as their primary Qbank scored 10.4 points higher on Step 2 CK. Beyond the questions, you get the Library, a three-digit score estimate, the Anki add-on, and clinical tools you'll keep using on rotations and in residency.
Three things are specific to AMBOSS:
- Every question links to a full Library article, the same one a resident would use for that patient, rather than an explanation alone.
- You see a three-digit score estimate in real time, alongside your percent correct, so you know where you stand on the actual Step 2 CK scale.
- One Qbank add-on covers Step 1, Step 2 CK, Shelf exams, and Step 3, so there's nothing new to buy between exams.

Yes. Every question you've answered stays in your profile when you switch your study objective to Step 2 CK. Your score estimate is recalculated for the new exam from what you already know, and your adaptive sessions and study recommendations pick up from there.
Yes. The same Qbank add-on and Library cover every Shelf exam, with a study plan for each rotation. Everything you answer during clerkships counts toward your Step 2 CK profile, so studying for the rotation you're currently on counts as Step 2 CK prep at the same time.
Yes. The AMBOSS app has the full Qbank and Library, and your sessions sync between phone and laptop. The Library also works offline, so you can read on a commute or on call without a connection.
