The UK Medical Licensing Assessment is the standard every doctor now meets before they can practise in the UK. It has two components: the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), a computer-based multiple-choice exam, and the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA), a practical examination. Both routes are assessed against the same GMC content map and international medical graduates meet the same standard through the PLAB test.
If you're a UK medical student, your school delivers both exams. The AKT is two 100-item papers (a total of 200 single best answer questions), five options each, sat over two consecutive days, two hours per paper, no negative marking. Your school decides when you sit it, and some run it in the penultimate year rather than the final year. Your CPSA will be your school's own clinical exam. Many schools call it an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and it will be built to GMC criteria.
If you qualified outside the UK, you take the PLAB test rather than sitting the MLA separately. PLAB 1 is 180 single best answer questions in three hours; PLAB 2 is 16 eight-minute clinical stations. PLAB is MLA-compliant. PLAB 1 meets the AKT requirements, PLAB 2 meets the CPSA requirements.
