Tocolysis

The process of slowing cervical dilation by administering tocolytic medications, which decrease uterine contractions, thereby delaying labor (typically up to 48 hours, although some agents may act for several days). Indications include cervical insufficiency, premature contractions at 24–34 weeks' gestation to allow antenatal corticosteroid administration, and to provide time for adequate intervention if complications arise (e.g., for cesarean section).
