A mixture of phospholipids and proteins produced by alveolar type II cells. The phospholipids reduce alveolar surface tension and thereby prevent the alveoli from collapsing. Deficiency can lead to respiratory distress syndrome, which is most common in preterm infants and often requires tracheal instillation of surfactant.
