A transient, self-limited patchy inflammation of the thyroid gland, characterized by granuloma formation. Often follows viral infection and is more common in women. Inflammation typically causes a triphasic pattern from thyrotoxicosis to hypothyroidism, before returning to a euthyroid state. Most common cause of thyroid pain.
