A muscle that originates from the medial portion of the clavicle as well as manubrium sterum and inserts into the mastoid process. It is innervated by the spinal accessory nerve. Unilateral contraction of the sternocleidomastoid turns the head to the opposite side. Bilateral sternocleidomastoid contract causes neck flexion.
