A rare inflammatory myopathy characterized by proximal skeletal muscle weakness, increased serum creatine kinase concentration, and evidence of myositis on EMG and biopsy, in the absence of any of the characteristic findings of the other inflammatory myopathies. Considered a diagnosis of exclusion.
