An inherited disorder characterized by the presence of an abnormal form of hemoglobin in which the distal histidine in the beta globin chain is replaced by arginine, which increases the ligand binding space around iron. Results in increased binding to carbon monoxide; the carboxyhemoglobn concentration is often more than 3% in affected individuals.
