Common, harmless heart sounds during infancy and childhood that often disappear by adulthood. Characteristics suggesting an innocent heart murmur are an intensity < 3/6, position-dependency, asymptomatic patient, early or midsystolic murmurs, and physiologic split of S2. Often an ECG or echocardiogram is performed to rule out an underlying heart disease that requires treatment.
