A group of skeletal muscles that allow voluntary control over urinary-flow inhibition. The male external urethral sphincter surrounds the membranous urethra, while the female external urethral sphincter is comprised of three distinct muscles (urethrovaginal muscle, compressor urethrae, and sphincter urethrae) working in unison.
