A protease enzyme that breaks down elastin. Usually inhibited by α1-antitrypsin. Produced by the pancreas to digest protein and measured as a marker of exocrine pancreatic function. Excessive activity caused loss of elastic fibers in the lung, increase compliance (as in emphysema). Also produced by bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas) and destroys host tissues.
