Abbreviation: UC
An inflammatory bowel disease with chronic mucosal and submucosal inflammation of the colon, typically starting in the rectum, and may extend to the distal colon or to the cecum. Most commonly occurs in individuals 20–30 years of age. Manifests with bloody diarrhea with mucus, fecal urgency, abdominal pain, and tenesmus. Extraintestinal manifestations are common and include uveitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, arthritis, erythema nodosum, and pyoderma gangrenosum.
