A heterogeneous group of disorders that affect muscle tone and the development of movement and posture. Results from nonprogressive damage to the brain in utero and/or during infantile development. Risk factors include prematurity, TORCH infections, intracerebral hemorrhage, and postnatal meningitis. Manifestations include spastic paresis, ataxia, involuntary movements (choreoathetosis, dystonia), dysarthria, and impaired intellectual development.
