A continuous layer of epithelial cells that lines the bronchial tree. Consists of goblet, ciliated, and basal cells. Acts as a barrier to maintain the normal airway interface and activates inflammatory cells in response to inhaled irritants. Facilitates the response to chronic inflammation by means of tissue repair, fibrosis, and squamous metaplasia.
